Your complete ETIAS guide

Everything you need to know about the European Travel Information and Authorization System. Get ready for hassle-free travel to Europe expected from late 2026.

What is ETIAS?

The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) is a new electronic travel authorization for visa-exempt nationals traveling to the Schengen Area.

ETIAS is not a visa—it's a travel authorization that screens travelers before they arrive in Europe. Similar to the United States' ESTA system, ETIAS aims to strengthen security checks while facilitating legitimate travel to the 30 European countries in the Schengen Area.

Once approved, your ETIAS authorization is valid for 3 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. You can enter the Schengen Area multiple times, with each stay limited to 90 days within a 180-day period.

Quick Processing

Most applications are processed quickly. Processing can take up to 30 days in some cases.

Valid for 3 Years

One authorization covers multiple trips to Europe for up to 3 years.

30 Countries

Travel freely across all Schengen Area countries with one authorization.

When Does ETIAS Start?

ETIAS implementation follows a phased approach to ensure smooth transition for travelers and border authorities.

1

Late 2026

Expected Launch

ETIAS application system is expected to go live. Official launch date to be confirmed by EU authorities.

2

Mid 2027

Grace Period

Six-month transition period begins. ETIAS becomes mandatory, but travelers without authorization may still be allowed entry with warnings.

3

2028

Full Enforcement

ETIAS becomes fully mandatory. Travelers without valid authorization will be denied boarding and entry to the Schengen Area.

Plan Ahead

We recommend applying for ETIAS well before your planned travel date to avoid any last-minute complications. Processing can take up to 30 days in some cases, so apply early.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to the most common questions about ETIAS and the application process.

ETIAS is a travel authorization for visa-exempt nationals, while a Schengen visa is required for citizens of countries that don't have visa-free access to the Schengen Area (like Turkey). ETIAS is quicker, cheaper (€20 vs €80+ for a visa), and entirely online. If you currently travel to Europe without a visa, you'll need ETIAS from late 2026 onwards.

While many ETIAS applications may be processed quickly, officially processing can take up to 30 days in some cases. We recommend applying well in advance of your travel date to allow sufficient processing time.

If your ETIAS application is denied, you have the right to appeal within 30 days. You'll receive detailed information about the reason for denial and the appeals process. Alternatively, you may need to apply for a Schengen visa through the embassy or consulate of the country you plan to visit. Our support team can guide you through both options.

Yes! Each traveler needs their own ETIAS authorization, including children. Parents or legal guardians can complete applications on behalf of minors under 18 years old. However, children under 18 and adults over 70 are exempt from the €20 application fee (authorization still required).

No, you don't need to print your ETIAS authorization. It's electronically linked to your passport, and border authorities will be able to access it digitally. However, we recommend keeping a copy (digital or printed) of your approval email for your records.

No, ETIAS is only for tourism, business visits, transit, or medical purposes for stays up to 90 days within a 180-day period. If you plan to work, study, or stay longer than 90 days, you'll need to apply for the appropriate visa or residence permit from the relevant country.
